MIF11
About MIF11
Our third festival was defined by its incredible variety – particularly in music. On the one hand, Björk premiered her high-tech, high-concept Biophilia project at Campfield Market Hall. On the other, violinist Alina Ibragimova joined the Quay Brothers for a series of intimate performances in the medieval warren of Chetham’s School of Music. While Damon Albarn and Rufus Norris teamed up for the haunting opera Dr Dee, Victoria Wood brought together a choir of local schoolchildren for That Day We Sang and our programme of gigs included everyone from Snoop Dogg to Amadou & Mariam.
MIF Creative’s Sacred Sites project took the Festival into churches, mosques and other houses of worship around Manchester, while Punchdrunk brought Dr Who to MediaCityUK in The Crash of the Elysium. Salford was also the setting for one of the most extraordinary shows in MIF’s history: The Life and Death of Marina Abramović, an undefinable epic directed by Robert Wilson and starring Willem Dafoe, Anohni and Abramović herself.
