Choreographer Gregory Maqoma on the set of Return to the Forest

Gregory Maqoma | In the Studio

We meet Gregory Maqoma in rehearsals for Return to the Forest – a new puppetry and dance show by Theatre-Rites, directed by Sue Buckmaster.

The rehearsal room is fizzing with energy and ideas. Here, Gregory talks about the importance of collaboration to his practice, breaking the fourth wall and using dance as a way of releasing trauma, as he reflects on his upbringing in apartheid South Africa. Plus get a first look at the objects in the show – including an unruly CCTV camera!

Gregory Maqoma is a multi-award-winning choreographer. For MIF21, he collaborated with Theatre-Rites on The Global Playground, which explored the magic of play. At MIF19, Maqoma choreographed the powerful tale of Tree by Idris Elba and Kwame Kwei-Armah.
