The Difference Engine

A site-specific work for children aged seven and over, this madcap show took place in a curious deserted courtyard at the centre of Manchester Town Hall. Co-commissioned with the Centre for Urban Education and the Museum of Science & Industry, The Difference Engine’s take on Charles Babbage and his efforts to produce the first computer made maths and science fun, fascinating and a little bit dangerous… The show inspired extensive work with local schools resulting in new teaching materials and an exhibition of work by local children.

‘I have now seen a level of independence and creativity in the children that I would not have seen without this project’ Teacher, Bishop Bilsborrow Memorial Roman Catholic Primary School

Commissioned by MIF Creative, the Museum of Science & Industry and the Centre for Urban Education at Manchester Metropolitan University. Produced by Manchester International Festival and Walk the Plank.
