Springing up miraculously opposite Manchester Town Hall, John Gerrard’s Infinite Freedom Exercise was an arresting intervention into a space that many of us walk through every day. The 35sq m video wall functioned as a window in space, a portal that took the viewer from Manchester to the Middle East, where an anonymous soldier moved through a series of choreographed movements in the desert. Troubling and opaque, the work ran for 24 hours every day but never lost the capacity to surprise and provoke even the most oblivious passer-by.
