READ: Tips for Emerging Writers

Get your pens out – Thursday brings writing workshops and The Welcome Poetry Slam. We caught up with The Poetry Place's Gabriel Oyediwura and LayFullstop, who is running The Art of Storytelling. We asked, what is one piece of advice you have for emerging writers?

Gabriel Oyediwura:

My advice to emerging writers is to read and listen to as much poetry as possible, online, but especially in person e.g. open mic shows. Also, play with words and phrases. I’m often reciting words and phrases that either randomly or consciously come to mind, and I toy with their pronunciation, tempo, rhyme, word association. This helps to keep the mind fluid to the possibilities of what you can create.

LayFullstop:

A piece of advice that I’ve always found useful is just write it down. Try not to judge whether that thought or idea is good or bad but simply start by ‘decorating’ your page with words.

There’s nothing more intimidating than a blank page staring up at you. Once your page is full, then start picking the best ideas and write them on a fresh page, then the rest is up to you!
