Suzanne Lacy | In the Studio
What does it mean to be a socially engaged artist? We caught up with Suzanne Lacy in L. A. to find out
For our latest studio visit, we head to L.A. to meet Suzanne Lacy – a pioneer of socially engaged performance art.
Since the early 1970s, Lacy has created groundbreaking performances, installations and videos, addressing issues such as sexual violence, incarceration, aging and labour. Here, she talks about the social, questions-led practice at the heart of her work.
Plus, find out about her new five-channel film What do women (footballers) want? – created as part of our summer exhibition Football City, Art United. She talks about making the film in collaboration with two icons of the game: Manchester City and Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema and Angel City Football Club and New Zealand captain Ali Riley.
Football City, Art United runs from 3 July to 24 August 2025 at Aviva Studios. Find out more here.
