Factory Creatives is a new series where we head out into the city to find out more about the local creatives at the heart of our programme. For our third interview, we talked to DJ Emkay at the O2 Ritz where they hosted one of Manchester’s biggest K-pop events.

Can you introduce yourself?

I’m DJ Emkay, the DJ and curator behind Always K-Pop. Originally from Seoul, I began by hosting intimate K-pop nights for 100 people and have since grown the brand into a massive community, hosting sell-out events for over 1,000 people at iconic venues like the O2 Ritz. My mission is to make K-pop accessible and inclusive while staying authentic to my culture and its followers. Whether I’m playing for die-hard stans or curious newcomers, I’m here to bridge the gap– creating a space that celebrates Korean music and proves that everyone belongs on the dancefloor.

What or who inspires you to do the work that you do?

My inspiration comes from people showing up as their most authentic selves to appreciate Korean culture. There’s nothing better than watching someone enter a room knowing they won’t be judged, making friends and losing themselves in the music and dance. I’m so grateful K-pop – music from my home country – provides this platform. As K-culture is gaining wider interest now, I want to contribute my Korean heritage and professional experience so people can engage with it in a meaningful way. I’m driven by inclusivity and a desire to see our culture celebrated with true depth. Seeing this community grow is what makes every hour of organising worthwhile.

Why did you choose the location in your photograph?

I chose the O2 Ritz because it represents the bridge between my heart in Seoul and my life in the UK. It is a physical manifestation of years of hard work. The venue captures the raw energy of the city’s nightlife while serving as a reminder of how far the K-pop community has grown and the people who helped us get here. This location feels like a core memory for our community and K-pop family. I am so happy to bring people together in the centre of the city to share something loud, proud and Korean.

What’s your favourite thing about Manchester’s arts and culture scene?

Manchester has a uniquely cosmopolitan "come as you are" energy. I love how the city embraces subcultures with open arms and provides a platform for people to enjoy the niche things they love. This spirit of support has allowed me to organise various events, including Always K-Pop at Aviva Studios. It’s a city that rewards authenticity and supports anyone brave enough to start something new, making it the perfect home for a community-driven event like ours.

What would you say to someone who has never been to Always K-Pop?

Expect a celebration! You’ll find a massive, welcoming family waiting for you. Whether you know every chorus or you're a total newcomer, come for the music and dance, stay for the community, and leave with a dozen new friends and happy memories.

Always K-pop comes to Aviva Studios on Sunday 15 March 2026. Find out more and book tickets here.
