What forces drive people to leave their homes? Who triggers wars?
Ai Weiwei began researching the refugee crisis in 2015, visiting and interviewing those affected around the world.
This led to an important body of work including Human Flow, his documentary about the refugee experience.
It also produced Law of the Journey, an inflatable migrant boat and the single largest object Ai Weiwei has created in his career.
Drawn to questions of accountability, Ai Weiwei began researching 50 of the most powerful bombs humankind has invented.
This became the artwork History of Bombs, which was displayed on the floor of the Imperial War Museum in 2020.
Now, he has created a new version of History of Bombs made entirely from millions of toy bricks.
Presented as part of Button Up!, these artworks invite us to reflect on the connections between the refugee crisis and Britain's history of empire.
