Lubaina Himid wins Turner Prize 2017

Congratulations to Lubaina Himid for winning the Turner Prize last Tuesday. The judges praised her “uncompromising tackling of issues including colonial history and how racism persists today”.

For MIF17, we were privileged to have Lubaina Himid design this striking backdrop for our debate series Interdependence, which she also spoke at. You can watch her talk at  Interdependence: We Need to talk about Power below from around 1 hour in.  Lubaina’s politically charged work challenges stereotypical depictions of black figures in art history and makes black lives visible. You can find out more about Lubaina’s work in her post-win interview in the Guardian here.

The Turner prize exhibition is at Ferens Gallery, Hull, until 7 January.
