MIF17 dance shows in The Guardian’s Top 10 of 2017
We are absolutely delighted to see MIF17 appear twice in The Guardian dance critic Judith Mackrell’s Top 10 dance shows of the year – with the beautiful revival of Available Light at Number 6 and Boris Charmatz’s extraordinary 10000 Gestures taking the Number 1 spot for its audacity, theatricality and emotional kick!
Available Light brought together three giants of postwar American culture: choreographer Lucinda Childs, composer John Adams and architect Frank Gehry in a new production first staged in 1983. A perfect fusion of music, movement and art, Available Light is a landmark in American dance, and we were thrilled to bring this iconic piece to Manchester as a Trailblazer for The Factory.
For Boris Charmatz’s highly ambitious 10000 Gestures, staged in the atmospheric setting of Mayfield, a 25-strong ensemble of dancers performed, in succession, 10000 Gestures – none repeated, every one unique. At once joyous and melancholy, ephemeral and unforgettable, 10000 Gestures reinvented the language of dance in thrilling fashion.

The revival of Available Light was commissioned by the Cal Performances, University of California, Berkeley; Festspielhaus St Pölten; FringeArts, Philadelphia with the support of The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage; Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center and The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association; Kampnagel Hamburg – Center for Fine Arts; Onassis Cultural Centre – Athens; Tanz im August, Berlin; and Théâtre de la Ville – Paris and Festival d’Automne à Paris. Available Light was developed at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art). Produced by Pomegranate Arts, Inc.
10000 Gestures was produced by Musée de la danse in coproduction with Volksbühne Berlin, Manchester International Festival, Théâtre National de Bretagne-Rennes, Festival d’Automne à Paris, Chaillot – Théâtre National de la Danse (Paris), Wiener Festwochen, Sadler’s Wells and Taipei Performing Arts Center (ongoing/en cours).
