Taslima and Numan from Creative Design Manufacture developed Stitch Festival at their community textile space in Ardwick – a three-day celebration of the links between South Asian and British textiles, art, music, fashion and food. In the workshops leading up to Stitch Festival, participants learnt textile-making techniques such as kantha, a popular style of embroidery from Bengal, as well as tie-dying, screenprinting and blockprinting. Guests were invited to contribute to a collaborative kantha quilt that was displayed at the final event. Other activities included ‘Strike a Pose’ photography studio where attendees had their photos taken in traditional South Asian clothes, followed by an ‘Express Yourself’ fashion show.
Creative Design & Manufacture (CDM) is a unique facility that offers a creative space where people of all ages and backgrounds can learn textile skills in a new kind of community.
