MIF Celebrates Manchester Pride

One of the largest events of its kind in Europe, every year over August bank holiday weekend tens of thousands of people fill the streets, clubs, theatres, bars and galleries of Manchester for Manchester Pride to celebrate LGBTQ+ life in the city.

This year however, in light of COVID-19 restrictions, the celebrations look quite different with many artists and organisations taking their activities online or into other socially distant environments. So whilst there is no physical Pride event this weekend, there are scores of performances, events and conversations taking place online, on the radio and across social media – there’s even a parade, which this year has been filmed in advance to keep it safe for those taking part.

Testament to the vibrancy and determination of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ creative communities these alternative festivities are shaping up to be both as spectacular and pertinent as ever and we at MIF can’t wait to enjoy all that the city has to offer in these incredibly challenging circumstances.

MIF are incredibly proud to have supported a great number of fantastic Manchester-based LGBTQ+ artists over the last few months through our various creative funding opportunities made available in response to the COVID-19 crisis. As we celebrate Manchester Pride we are taking the opportunity to look back at and re-share some of our favourites.

Roma Havers and Friends – Paying Attention!

Watch six of the best queer writers in Manchester; Frankie BlausRoma HaversMandla RaeElla OtomewoOkechukwu Nzelu and Rosie Garland read from their work, discuss their practice and attempt to answer a vital question: ‘Now that you have our attention, how would you like to be read?’

Hear more from Roma in the latest Sexuality Summer School 2020: Digital Prequel Roundtable event discussing queer archives alongside international queer icons such as Del LaGrace Volcano and Topher Campbell.

RebeccaNeverBecky On the Request Line! A Virtual Vibe!

RebeccaNeverBecky’s On the Request Line! A Virtual Vibe! was a club night for the living room – an eclectic and interactive festival in their houses, and yours. This now renowned Manchester collective headed up by chief Mix-Stress Rebecca Swarray showcases new and emerging BAME, LGBT+ & QTIPOC Manchester DJs and creatives. Due to licensing restrictions, this event is unable to live on in the online realm, but we had a ball so here’s a FOMO-inducing shout out.

Enjoy more from the Mix-Stress herself at Escape to Freight Island from 6pm till midnight on Sunday 30 August.

House of Noir – Kiki in Our House

Watch back Manchester’s rising stars of vogue and ballroom, House of Noir, create a one-off quarantine kiki for MIF Live– a super-relaxed, youth-led, politically-driven voguing ball-from-home with the theme ‘All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go’, featuring dazzling live appearances by some of the city’s leading QTIPOC performers (queer, transgender and intersex people of colour).

Voguing is all the rage this Pride with a two-day Black Pride MCR Vogue takeover at Escape to Freight Island with live performances hosted by House of Ghetto and House of Blaque.

Cheddar Gorgeous

Known for her unicorn, alien, and other fantastical drag performances, Cheddar Gorgeous is one of the UK’s most celebrated drag queens with over 112,000 online followers. The ‘drag daddy’ of the Family Gorgeous, Cheddar is one of the driving forces of Manchester’s Home of Fabulous, Cha Cha Boudoir, an infamous and inclusive late-night club cabaret for spectacular creatures. More recently, Cheddar is one of the stars of Channel 4’s new hit show Drag SOS.

Her project Hero Worship, developed through a recent Remote Residency with MIF, is a series of nine photographic portraits showcasing unique drag ‘looks’. Each ‘look’ is made up of specially-designed makeup design and costume pieces that pay homage to a different group of key workers serving our communities during the COVID-19 crisis.

Cheddar is a busy queen over the bank holiday weekend; performing online for Manchester Museum in Queer Tales: Myths and Monsters, exhibiting alongside fellow MIF residency artist David Hoyle in Queer Contemporaries, and taking to the stage at Escape to Freight Island launching the first in the venue’s new weekly Amuse Bouche series of Sunday drag, dining and DJ sessions, sound-tracked by DJ Mix-Stress.

Artist Drop-Ins

As well as supporting artists to create work through this challenging time we have been able to offer regular online drop-in sessions for creatives of all kinds to share their thoughts, experiences, successes and concerns with one another and hear from special guest speakers from around the world plus our own Creative and Artistic Directors Mark Ball and John McGrath.

To celebrate Manchester Pride through August we have invited a host of specially selected LGBTQ+ artists to open up the discussion on how the current crisis has particularly impacted the LGBTQ+ creative community but also to celebrate the continuous innovation and joy behind the work being created by LGBTQ+ artists at this time.

Speakers this month include: Lois Weaver, Christian Asare, Cheddar Gorgeous, Simone French, Scottee and Louise Wallwein.

A Message of Pride from Mark Ball

On the eve of this Pride weekend I’ve been reflecting on the experiences that have shaped me and on the journey of our community over the past three decades. 28 years ago I dived headlong into the heart of queer theatre when I joined Gay Sweatshop, working with the brilliant artistic duo of Lois Weaver […] Mark Ball
