The opportunity

To celebrate Ivan Michael Blackstock’s Traplord and a new film by Jenn Nkiru coming to Aviva Studios this autumn, we’re inviting global majority writers to write responses to the themes within these two exciting works.

Traplord explores themes of Black masculinity, life, death and rebirth, while Jenn Nkiru’s new film explores the body, architecture as well as Manchester’s industrial past. You can find out more about each work here: Traplord, A New Film by Jenn Nkiru

We’re inviting submissions from global majority writers for new works inspired by some of these themes for publication on Factory+. We’re open to publishing different genres, including prose, poetry, flash fiction or dialogue/monologue.

This is an opportunity for global majority writers based in the North.

How to pitch

Send up to 100 words on your idea and a couple of examples of your writing to editorial@factoryinternational.org by 2 September. We want to encourage new and emerging voices so don’t worry – your examples don’t have to be published!

If your pitch is fiction-based, think about:

  • Your characters and their history
  • The setting - where does your short story take place?
  • Plot and pacing - how you will develop the story? Do you want to leave it on a cliffhanger or bring the story to the conclusion?

We also welcome pitches from other genres including poetry and dialogue/monologue. If you’d like to pitch for these genres, please send a short summary of your idea/concept and a couple of examples of previous work.

We will contact those with successful pitches w/c 2 September for a full commission of up to 800 words. Please note that final pieces need to be submitted by 15 September.
